Kate Hamill's Emma
Emerald Theatre is seeking a dynamic, physical ensemble of actors for our 2026 Outdoor Summer Theatre production of Kate Hamill’s Emma. This isn’t your typical lace-and-tea-cups Austen; it’s a fast-paced, irreverent, and joyful romp that demands wit and stamina.
We are taking Highbury on the road! Our production will tour the stunning gardens and parks of Seattle and South King County, bringing professional, accessible theatre directly into our local communities.
We are looking for:
-
Actors with strong comedic timing and a knack for physical comedy - or would like to learn!
-
Performers who are excited by the unique challenges and rewards of outdoor, "found space" performance.
-
A diverse ensemble to bring a fresh, inclusive heartbeat to these classic characters.

Character Breakdowns
Emma Woodhouse - (late 20s -30s) Very clever, charming and a natural comedienne. Likes to play matchmaker
Harriet Smith (20s) - a deeply likable girl from the lower classes. A born follower
Mrs. Weston (mid 30s - late 40s) - Emma's former governess. Very smart woman with a good sense of humor.
Miss Bates (40s +) - headmistress of a struggling school for girls. Good-natured, if motor-mouthed and daft woman.
Mrs. Bates (70s +) - An elderly lady, very opinionated, who communicates exclusively in grunts and hand gestures.
Jane Fairfax - A beautiful girl who seems to do everything right. An over-achiever.
Mrs. Elton - (20s-30s) - not bright, and has a laugh that's the auditory equivalent of nails being torn out of your fingers.
Mr. Knightley (30s-40s) - a handsome man, super charming. A bit of a rule follower. Is preoccupied with Emma.
Mr. Woodhouse (60s +) an over-anxious, melancholy hypochondriac, but nice.
Mr. Weston (40s-60s) the kind of man who likes to make awkward "dad jokes." Proud of his son, Frank Churchill.
Mr. Elton (40s +) - A clergyman who sometimes gets the wrong idea about women and what they think of him. ADORES poetry.
Frank Churchill - (20s-30s) - Mr. Elton's son from his first marriage. An incredibly charming, handsome, mischievous flirt of a man.
Robert Martin - a sweet groundskeeper in love with Harriet. Non speaking role.

Emma Synopsis
Emma Woodhouse is clever, educated, and energetic... and in imminent danger of going mad with idleness. In a time when respectable ladies are expected to sit quietly at home, she desperately needs projects-and prides herself on matchmaking, much to the chagrin of her friend Mr. Knightley. But where Emma's considerable energies focus, screwball comedy follows... A fresh feminist take on a treasured classic, this Emma breaks down convention, expectation, and even the fourth wall with vibrant comic flair-leading audiences "forward, onward, and upward!"
